Features and Benefits 9800 XL
No Hidden Extra Costs Both FireWire and USB cables are in the box.
ScanPilot Achieving high quality results used to require extensive scanning knowledge. SilverFast changed all that and now, even first time scanner users can achieve brilliant results with ScanPilot. ScanPilot guides the user through the steps required to deliver a perfect image.
CMYK Soft-proofing SilverFast allows scanning in CMYK mode. By selecting the required CMYK ICC profile it is possible to view the output colours, based on this profile, prior to scanning saving time-consuming post-scanning adjustments. It is also possible to view the individual C,M,Y and K channels prior to the final scan.
ICC Calibration Both reflective and transparency IT-8 targets are included allowing the scanner to be periodically calibrated. Once calibrated, SilverFast creates an ICC profile, which automatically integrates into the colour workflow ensuring that the scanner always delivers accurate colour and greyscale results.
Extensive User Control SilverFast presents a clean, simple to use interface. For those wishing to make further adjustments to their images, SilverFast also provides total user control with manual adjustments available for all aspects of the scanning process.
Noise and Grain Reduction GANE is a software system that dramatically reduces grain and noise in the image whilst preserving image detail.
Adaptive Colour Restoration Restore old, faded colour and black and white film or normalise over-saturated colours with SilverFast ACR.
Real Time Image Correction SilverFast shows the effect of changes to the image parameters in real time via the prescan window allowing you to quickly view the effects of any changes.
Automatic Image Optimisation SilverFast uses artificial intelligence to optimise the scanned result. Optimisation requires the pressing of a single button to deliver a perfect image without the need for any prior scanning knowledge.
Professional Unsharp Masking Sharpness is a significant feature for brilliant images but controlling it can be difficult. SilverFast makes it easy to see the effect by presenting a before and after image in the sharpening window.
NegaFix Negative Scanning System Negatives are amongst the most complex film types to scan successfully. SilverFast NegaFix makes this supremely simple by reducing the negative scanning process to three simple steps. With well over 120 negative film types supported, obtaining an accurate result with negatives have never been easier.
SilverFast Ai Pro 6 Software is equally as important as hardware when it comes to achieving a brilliant result. SilverFast is the one package capable of squeezing the maximum amount of detail from your images and includes an advanced scratch and dust removal system.
Scratch and Dust Removal This system provides the ability to easily remove dust and scratches from images during the scanning process. Unlike other scratch and dust removal products, this system works with black and white as well as colour film. A real-time preview permits the best possible setting to be found to achieve maximum removal of unwanted artefacts. Can be used with transparencies and reflective prints.
High Optical Density (3.7Dmax) When scanning positive and negative film, high optical density enables more highlight and shadow detail to be captured from the image with more accurate colour values.
Multi-Sampling Support All CCD scanners are subject to random noise which reduces the dynamic range and image quality. Multi-sampling scans each line a number of times and the result is averaged. As the noise is random, most, or all of it, can be removed by this method. The result is cleaner, more detailed scans.
Cables and Card Included A PCI FireWire card (Windows) and cable, plus a USB cable allow immediate connection to almost all Macintosh and Windows computers. The addition of a SCSI card and cable (not included) delivers Windows NT support.
Transparency Option The optional Transparency Adaptor offers a large 406 x 305mm (16" x 12") scanning area. Several templates are included to help position film correctly on the scan bed and to eliminate newton ring distortion by preventing contact between film and the glass of the scanner bed.
48-bit colour depth, 16-bit grayscale The latest CCD technology has used to deliver the highest quality scans possible.
1600dpi Resolution 1600 x 3200dpi optical resolution covers nearly all reflective scanning requirements and many transparency requirements too. Delivers 800% enlargement when printing at 200dpi.
Large Format A3 Scan Area The ScanMaker 9800XL is able to scan large format work up to A3 size or many smaller images at the same time.

Review - This is the scanner used for American Art Archives
This is the scanner used for American Art Archives

I've had this scanner for nearly two years now (it replaced a SCSI Microtek that did fail after several years of intense use). I'm using it on a Macintosh G5 dual 2gig, mostly for Photoshop, web, and OCR. It's much faster than the SCSI version and running with a fast Mac, there's no hicups in any foreground applications while scanning at 300 dpi (the only setting I need).

It's not unsual for American Art Archives do to 50 scans in a day. The Microtek just keeps on keeping on.

My one quibble is that the Scanmaker software has a few nagging interface oddities, like not being able to just hit enter/return to start a scan. Also, it's best to overview each item before scanning as if you just scan page after page, even if each page has similiar images, the software blows out all images after the first scan. What's up with that?

If you need a workhorse that can do tabloid and works with OSX, check this unit out.

Microtek is a great company with a great product! I recommend this scanner for the professionals who need a larger scanner without the larger price.
